Ryan Catholic College Mission Statement
Ryan Catholic College lives the Emmaus Story, inspiring students in their journey to a life of faith, service, compassion and learning. Our inclusive community challenges and prepares our young people to embrace their future with confidence and success.
Acknowledgement Of Country
We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land and waters, the Wulgurukaba, and that this country has been a place of learning and ceremony for tens of thousands of years. We also acknowledge the neighbouring language groups as brothers and sisters of the land. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging. May we walk gently and peacefully on this land together.
Reflection
The Feast of Saint Mary MacKillop
Recently, we celebrated the feast of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia’s first saint and a woman who continues to inspire us here at Ryan Catholic College. Mary MacKillop devoted her life to God through service, education, and compassion, especially for those who were poor, vulnerable, or living in remote parts of Australia. With Fr. Julian Tenison Woods, she founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and established schools that gave children hope and opportunity.
Mary’s life reminds us that true greatness comes from living with faith and courage, and from responding to the needs of others. Her words, “Never see a need without doing something about it,” call us at Ryan to live out our own mission — to inspire students in their journey of faith, service, compassion, and learning. Just as Mary strengthened communities through her love and commitment, we too are called to be a community that reflects Christ’s love in our world today.
Prayer
Loving God,
We thank You for the gift of Saint Mary MacKillop,
who showed us how to live with courage, faith, and compassion.
May her example guide our Ryan community
to recognise the needs around us and to respond with generosity.
Help us to walk together in faith,
as students, staff, and families who seek to serve others with joy.
Stay with us, Lord.
Amen.
Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On August 22, the Church celebrates the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast honours Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth, crowned in glory by her Son. It reminds us of her example of faith, love, and service, guiding us to follow Christ more closely.
A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. ~Revelation 12:1
Prayer
Mother and Queen of Heaven, this day I run to you as a child with confidence and trust. You are the glorious Queen Mother, reigning over all of your children with love and mercy. Please pray for me, and bestow upon me all that I need. I open my heart to the grace of your Son, which you are entrusted to dispense. Make me holy and free from sin.
Queen of Heaven, pray for us.
Stay with us, Lord.
Amen.
From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Oh what a night! Congratulations to our fabulous Parents and Friends committee for a very successful Ryan Fair last Friday. There were thousands of people in attendance and one very lucky winner of the Mike Carney Toyota Rav 4! The stalls were sensational, as well as the entertainment, all in a good old fashioned family friendly atmosphere. It was a delight to witness the community in such good spirits. Thank you to all!
Ryan’s School Renewal - Verification visit
We had a very successful Verification visit from our panel and external validator. They were very impressed with the passion and love our staff, students and parents have for the College, and have given us strong affirmation of the draft strategic priorities. We now move to refine them down into succinct priorities statements, before we begin work on implementation plans for them to sustain us between 2026-2029.
Shout out
To our Year 12 students as they complete their IA3’s and head into their final assessments before external exams, work experience and job applications. There are some impressive 100% Assessment results in our Year 12 cohort. We are so proud of you all.
Congratulations to our future student leaders - 2026
A warm thanks is extended to all the Year 11 students who were nominated for student leadership positions. The field was very admirable and we have far too many worthy candidates for our positions for 2026. This is a great place for our College to be in.
Interviews for shortlisted candidates commenced this week, and the announcement for 2026 student leader positions will begin in Week 8 this term. Best wishes to all.

Annual School SatisfactIon Surveys are still open until 22 August.
All parents and carers should have received a link for the annual survey. We have so much to be proud of and so much to celebrate, and we look forward to your survey results so that we can celebrate our successes and build on our progress with your feedback. We rely on this to grow, and so we appreciate you putting aside 15 minutes to do this for us, your children and our College.
This is my last week for the term, before I head on some sabbatical leave, and I wish all families, students and staff a wonderful term break. We’re not there yet - so I look forward to hearing about more achievements, successes and progress over the next 4 weeks of term.
Daryl Bathe, Acting Principal will do a sterling job and I wish the College well for a great end of term.
Blessings for the fortnight ahead.

INTER-SCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Congratulations to Leonie Bonke, coaches and athletes for their incredible success at the “A” Schools Athletics Carnival on Friday. Our students delivered an unforgettable performance and had a clean sweep of the Girls’ Overall, Boys’ Overall and Overall Winner trophies, claiming second in the Average Winner!
A big shout out to the staff for their commitment to training sessions - Leonie, Perri, Steve, Zane, Vanessa and Gavin. Their dedication truly paid off and we couldn’t be prouder of our Ryan community.
BOOK WEEK
This week we jump into the adventures of Book Week. Character parades will be held on Friday morning 9am, both on the Senior and Junior Campus. If you are able to attend our Parent Reading Challenge on the Junior Campus at 8.30am, we would love to see you there. Thank you to Meaghan, Danielle and Sandra for creating such a magical experience this week.
EXCURSIONS
Year 3 students are excited about their upcoming excursions to Billabong Sanctuary in the next few weeks. Please ensure you’ve given permission for your child to attend their excursion. Year 1 students will venture to the Senior Campus to be Entomologists for a morning of excitement and adventure. Year 3 will also venture to the Senior Campus for a visit from Townsville Wheelies.
JUNIOR CAMPUS ARRIVAL TIME
Teacher supervision commences at 8.10am, therefore any students who arrive at school prior to that must be supervised by an adult (e.g. parent, grandparent, etc.) or attend before school care. It is a safety issue if students arrive early and aren’t supervised.
SICK CHILDREN
If students are sick they should stay at home. However, if they become ill during the school day, they’re sent to Sick Bay. They will be cared for in Sick Bay and parents/caregivers contacted with a request to collect them within 30 minutes.
UNIFORM AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE
Please be mindful of our Personal Appearance and Uniform Regulations. Thank you for your support to ensure that our students are following these guidelines.

Year 9 Activity Days – Building Skills and Memories
In Week 10 last term, our Year 9 students enjoyed two exciting activity days designed to build teamwork, resilience, and plenty of fun along the way.
On the first day, students had a full program of activities including tenpin bowling, arcade games, and a variety of indoor sports at Wildcatz. The highlight for many was the Ninja Park, where students tested their agility and strength across different challenges. Laughter, cheering, and friendly competition filled the day, giving the cohort a chance to relax together outside of the classroom.
Day two took a different turn, with Braveminds Outdoors leading the group through a series of survival and life-skill workshops. Students learnt practical skills such as water purification, fire starting, basic emergency first aid, orienteering, and how to build an emergency shelter. These hands-on activities not only provided valuable knowledge but also encouraged problem-solving, teamwork, and perseverance.
Across both days, the emphasis was on connection—whether through shared achievement, friendly rivalry, or overcoming challenges together. Students left with new skills, stronger friendships, and lasting memories that will continue to shape their Year 9 journey.

Students recently took part in the Wetlands Warriors Saltmarsh Saver event with Earthwatch Australia, where they discovered just how vital saltmarshes are to the health of our planet. During the day, they learnt how these rich ecosystems play an important role in reducing carbon and supporting a wide variety of unique wildlife.
The hands-on experience inspired students to think about how they can help protect these precious environments. They shared thoughtful ideas on how to raise awareness and take action to ensure our saltmarsh habitats continue to thrive for years to come.
It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop their environmental knowledge and become real champions for change.

Endeavour Awards Assembly
On Friday 19 September, we will come together to celebrate the consistent dedication our students show in their studies. The Endeavour Awards Assembly is a special time to recognise students who consistently give their very best and demonstrate outstanding work habits.
To achieve an Endeavour Award, students must demonstrate work habits that are rated as ‘outstanding’ more than ‘very good’, and no less than ‘very good’.
This year, we are excited to introduce a new recognition: the Principal’s Award. This award acknowledges significant improvement in work habits. The top three students in each year level (Years 8-12) will receive this award, based on their Grade Point Average improvement for work habits, calculated using the most recent reporting cycle and Semester 2 of last year. We are proud to see remarkable growth in many of our students this year. Recipients of the Principal’s Award will also be invited, along with their families, to a celebratory breakfast in Week 9.
I look forward to seeing our Award Recipients and sharing this special occasion with all of you on Friday of Week 10.

Our Ryan teams hit the fields with skill, teamwork, and determination in every game. From strong defensive efforts to some impressive attacking plays, our players gave it their all and did our College proud.

The Ryan Catholic College Senior Girls Volleyball Team made an impressive showing at the Queensland Senior Schools Cup held on the Gold Coast, ultimately finishing 4th overall in their division after three action-packed days of competition.
The tournament kicked off with a spirited performance from the team. In their opening match against Kepnock, the girls demonstrated resilience by battling back from an initial loss in the first set to secure victory in the second and win the third set in a timed-out match. They continued to display heart in their second match against Mabel Park, winning the first set but narrowly losing in the subsequent sets.
Day two saw the team build on their momentum as they faced Redcliffe in their last pool game. The girls showcased their teamwork and skill with a commanding 3-0 victory, finishing strong in second place in their pool. This performance set the stage for the crossover matches. In a highly competitive first crossover game against Holland Park, the team fought valiantly but fell just short, with closely contested scores reflecting their determination.
Entering the final day of the tournament, the Ryan girls carried their fighting spirit into a match against a strong Aspley side. Despite their efforts, they experienced a tough defeat, which propelled them into a bronze medal match against Holland Park. The match was intense, with the girls showcasing their tenacity by clinching a set after narrowly losing the first. However, a decisive third set ultimately slipped away, leaving them with a commendable 4th place finish.
To cap off an unforgettable weekend, the team celebrated their achievements with a team dinner at Surfers Paradise, reflecting on their remarkable journey. The Ryan Catholic College community is incredibly proud of the girls for their exceptional performance, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to the team for an outstanding showing at the Queensland Senior Schools Cup!

As we reach the middle of this term, we are proud to announce our upcoming “Celebration 2025” on Wednesday the 27th. Our many ensembles have been working long and hard to prepare some amazing pieces which they’re very excited to present in just two weeks. Beyond this, our ensembles are continuing to work towards competing in the Townsville Eisteddfod, which begins on the 6th of September, just under a month away. In addition to many ensembles competing, there are many students competing in solo sections for singing, dancing, creative writing, and art.
Recently, we celebrated Ryan Day, which was filled with amazing performances from our senior band, choir, string ensemble and guitar ensemble. Not only this, but R-Factor was yet again a success, with many of our gifted students taking to the stage to show off their talents. Whether that talent be singing, dancing or playing instruments, every performance was spectacular! If you’d like to watch any of the performances, a full video of them has been posted to our school Facebook and Youtube accounts. Furthermore, several of our amazing competitors from R-Factor performed at Ryan Fair, alongside many other instrumentalists and dancers. Overall, we had a stage outside Emmaus Hall, one inside, and one on the oval, all of which were filled with amazing performers all night.
To add to all the talent we’ve seen lately, our Ryan Arts Collaborative created a series of wearable art pieces to be displayed at the Strand Ephemera. Of all the youth and school entries, our students were awarded with the Young Artistic Excellence award.

The 3 Rs Study Strategy – Read, Recite & Review
This is a proven study strategy that is extremely effective with recalling information. The student will read the information, close their notes and then try to remember as much as the information as possible. They either explain the information they have remembered by writing it down or explaining it to someone. The student then looks back at their notes to see how accurate they were.

2026 University Study for Graduating Students
A reminder for Year 12 students and families that university admission centres for 2026 study are now open. If an interview/portfolio submission/written submission/audition or some other step, is part of the process, there will be an earlier due date than for other courses. These due dates are usually in September.
It is the responsibility of each Year 12 student to know the application date deadlines and the application components required, for their tertiary courses. I am here to assist students, as much as possible, with their applications, but I will not be reminding students of all application deadlines and requirements.

Yarning Circles Yr 7, 8 & 9 (8th of August) Yr 10, 11 & 12 (15th of August)
The Middle School Yarning Circle was held on Friday 8 August, with 21 First Nations students from Years 7, 8 & 9 attending. Due to Ryan Fair's setup, we had our Yarning Circle in E2. The young people created their NAIDOC superhero, deciding on what their hero’s strength, vision for the future, and legacy would be. The senior school Yarning Circle was held last Friday 14 August, at the Yarning Circle, and they too designed their very own NAIDOC superhero. It was a great way of coming together and sharing ideas for the future and planting seeds in the young people’s hearts about what they might achieve in their lives.
Women’s Business
This term’s Women’s Business session was a weaving lesson led by Mrs Allison Hoolihan. 22 young women from Years 7, 8, 9, 10 & 12 attended. Mrs Hoolihan taught the young women a weaving style from South Australia that she had been taught. She spoke with the young women about how important it is to acknowledge the knowledge holders who have shared their skills, as it is part of their cultural heritage.
Men’s Business
This term’s Men’s Business session was focused on Fire Starting and the traditional use of spears, led by Les Tanna. 24 young men from Years 7-12 attended. Les shared his cultural knowledge and engaged the young men in cultural practices that enabled First Nations people to thrive in Australia for tens of thousands of years.
Emerging Leaders:
Outreach Project: Last Friday 15 August, we visited St Joseph’s School, Mundingburra, for our second session of the outreach program with 8 students from Years 7-9. Our theme was Art. The team was warmly welcomed into one lower Primary and one Upper Primary class. We shared Aboriginal art symbols. Each Emerging Leader student shared one that resonated with them and why. The class had to try all the symbols and then each student chose one to put on a shared canvas which was then donated as a token of our collaborative efforts. The Emerging Leaders put on temporary tattoos for the primary students as a reminder of our visit. We are looking forward to our last session in Term 4.

QATSIF Graduation:
On Tuesday, 5th August, we took 16 of our Year 12 QATSIF scholars to JCU for a Graduation celebration for all Townsville schools. Students were awarded this scholarship in Year 11 or Year 12. It was a beautiful ceremony to celebrate their commitment to their school, their culture and their ongoing academic success. It was lovely to have parents join us in this celebration.

Term 3, 2025 Important Dates:
Yarning Circle:
- Yr 5 & 6 - Friday 29 August 2025, Week 7
Blak Excellence Lunch and Yr 12 Graduation Liturgy

SPECIAL REPORT: Anxiety & Young People
Anxiety is a natural and expected part of growing up. In fact, it plays an important role in helping young people prepare for challenges, stay alert to potential dangers and adapt to new situations. It can motivate them to study for a test, practise before a performance, or tread carefully in unfamiliar settings. However, for many children and adolescents today, anxiety can shift from being a helpful response to becoming intense, persistent and disruptive.
The world young people are growing up in is fast-paced and often demanding. Academic pressures, social expectations, family changes and the constant presence of digital media, can all contribute to heightened stress and worry.
When anxiety is left unrecognised or unsupported, it can begin to affect a young person's wellbeing, learning, friendships and self-confidence. That's why it's so important for adult carers to understand how anxiety may present in children. Everyone experiences anxiety differently, and there's no one-size-fits-all solution.
This edition of SchoolTV raises awareness and provides families with practical strategies to help young people manage anxiety in healthy, constructive ways.
